E*TRADE Review: What the Morgan Stanley Ownership Actually Changed

E*TRADE Review: What the Morgan Stanley Ownership Actually Changed

E*TRADE has spent the last few years quietly becoming a Morgan Stanley product rather than the scrappy independent broker it used to be, and I think that ownership change is the most important thing to understand before you open an account here. It’s changed what the platform is good at, and it’s worth being specific about what you’re actually getting.

What It Actually Costs

Stock and ETF trades are commission-free, which is now the industry standard rather than a differentiator, so I won’t pretend that’s a reason to pick E*TRADE specifically. Options trading runs $0.65 per contract, in line with most full-service competitors, and mutual fund investors get access to a no-transaction-fee fund lineup that’s genuinely broad. There’s no account minimum to open a standard brokerage account.

Where the Morgan Stanley Ownership Actually Shows Up

The practical benefit of being owned by Morgan Stanley is access to research and market commentary that a standalone discount broker wouldn’t have the resources to produce in-house, and retirement account tools (traditional and Roth IRAs) that are more fully built out than what you’d find at some of the newer mobile-first brokers I’ll cover later in this series. The tradeoff is that E*TRADE’s platform feels built for someone who wants a complete financial-services relationship, banking, investing, retirement planning in one place, more than it’s built for someone who just wants the fastest, lightest app to place trades.

Who I’d Actually Recommend This To

I’d point a retirement-focused investor or an active options trader toward E*TRADE before I’d point a pure buy-and-hold index investor there, since the platform’s strengths lean toward people who want tools and research, not just a cheap, bare-bones trading app. If you already bank with Morgan Stanley or want that kind of integrated relationship, the pitch gets stronger. If you just want the cheapest, simplest way to buy index funds, there isn’t much here you can’t get elsewhere with a lighter interface.

Sign-up bonuses and promotional offers at E*TRADE change frequently and I’m not going to quote a specific current figure here, since anything I write today could be outdated by the time you read it. Check the current new-account offer directly on their site before you open an account if a bonus is part of your decision.
